BestOfThis is a great app to use if you’re travelling to a city and want to know the “best” things in that location. It’s an editorially-curated app from the Village Voice that offers recommendations in categories from food to shopping to art to recreation. Think, “Best Veggie Dish” in San Francisco or “Best Jukebox” in Miami. It’s also nice for discovering great new places in your home city! I love the “Best Takeout When You Feel a Cold Coming On” category. – Bridget |

CreatorverseCreatorverse isn’t a game--it’s like a drawing app, but for physics and engineering! Best for older elementary kids (and up) who love to figure things out. Select basic shapes, connect them, and use graph-based interfaces to give each one separate characteristics. Do you want the square to bounce high? Should the triangle fall slowly? Hit “play” and see what happens next! Add teleport functions, motors, or magnets to your objects with additional tool packs. You can learn by trial and error, or you can give yourself a headstart by watching tutorials on creatorverse.com. Either way, expect to spend some time helping your child learn the ropes; what a great opportunity to play together, and talk about force, gravity, cause-and-effect, and other STEM concepts! – Melissa |

DropboxThe first thing I do with any new device is install Dropbox. It’s a cloud storage service that works anywhere, but it’s particularly nice on the phone because you can set it to automatically upload any pictures you take. – Mark |

Endless AlphabetA stand-out, well-designed app that fosters letter recognition, phonics practice, and vocabulary building, all served up with the giggles for preschool and kindergarten kids. Children swipe through a collection of words, dragging a set of animated letters (who make their letter “sound” when tapped) into the correct order. Once the word has been assembled, the creatures act out the definition. A unique selection of words, with more added every week, keeps this app fresh for grownups as well as kids. – Melissa |
