The Arapahoe Library District (ALD) values open access to information and we welcome everyone to our libraries. However, with the closure of some of Aurora’s libraries, two things have happened to make the situation unfair to our own taxpayers. The heavy use of our libraries by Aurora residents has made fewer materials available to those who are paying for them, and our own taxpayers have lost the value of reciprocal use of Aurora’s libraries. So, in order to be fair to ALD taxpayers, it is necessary to impose some reasonable check-out limits to non-ALD taxpayers who live in Aurora. Limits will only apply to materials and not services. There will be no limits on reserving meeting rooms, using computers or participating in programs. For non-ALD taxpayers who live in Aurora and would like to pay for full check-out privileges, a full-service Library Card is available for purchase.
Why?
The reason we are forced to do this is because Aurora voters chose not to financially support their library system, resulting in library closures. Before, Aurora patrons could use our libraries and our patrons could use Aurora libraries. Now, with so few locations, hours and materials available in Aurora, our patrons have lost the value of being able to use the Aurora libraries. At the same time, many Aurora residents continue to use our libraries without paying a tax to support our libraries, leaving fewer materials available to those who pay for them.
We want to continue to serve each and every patron, no matter where they live. So in fairness to our own taxpayers, the best way we know to continue to allow Aurora residents to use our libraries is to place limits on their use of our materials.
Thank you for your understanding as we strive to meet the needs of all patrons, while taking into consideration our limited resources.
