The thirteenth tale book cover

The Thirteenth Tale

by Diane Setterfield
This debut novel has all the feeling of a classic Gothic mystery. It is full of ghosts, murder, madness, secrets, and everything else that you would expect from the Bronte sisters or Daphne du Maurier. Set in the windswept Yorkshire moors, the tale revolves around Margaret Lea, a book lover and biographer who has been hired by the dying and reclusive author, Vida Winter, to pen her biography. Throw in a few strange families, feral twins, several very scary living people, and some scary ghosts, and you have a story that reels the reader into the very heart of it.

"Very different, interesting book. It grabs you and doesn't let go. It's disturbing in a couple of ways but ultimately very entertaining - you just can't put it down wanting to find out what happens next." Janelle

Tender Bar Cover Art

The Tender Bar

J.R. Moehringer
A young fatherless man growing up in pub-laden Manhasset, New York, finds feminine comfort from his mother, and masculine camaraderie in a series of bars and taverns, most notably "Dickens" run by his Uncle Charlie. This warmly told tale brings to life colorful characters who are the father figures that formed him. A read you won't soon forget.

Loving Frank book jacket

Loving Frank

by Nancy Horan
This debut novel is a fictionalized account of the scandal that rocked Chicago when Frank Lloyd Wright fell in love with the wife of one of his clients. It's written from the woman's perspective, but I truly enjoyed the glimpses into the life and personality of one of America's greatest architects at least from the authors point of view. What's so fascinating about this wonderful book is how Ms. Horan managed to interest and captivate the reader despite the protagonists' less than sterling characters. A great book.

"Very interesting look at a very complex person. I had no idea that the fire actually occurred." Mary
