8 Literary Big Cats

When you think "big cat," do you think of The Lion King? Check out these other famous big cats—the literary kind!

Aslan from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis (1950). Aslan is a golden lion, good, wise and just, and the king of Narnia.


Bagheera from The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling (1894). Bagheera is an Indian leopard who escaped from captivity and became one of Mowgli's best friends. Don't forget about Shere Khan the tiger. He's Mowgli's enemy.  


Stelmaria from The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (1995). The snow leopard Stelmaria is Lord Asreil's daemon companion.


The Cowardly Lion from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum (1900). All the Cowardly Lion wants is to be brave. 


Tigger from Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne (1926). Lovable Tigger is a boisterous tiger who loves bouncing on his tail.


Grograman from The Neverending Story by Michael Ende (1979). Grograman, a lion-like creature, is called the Many Colored Death, and can change color.


Richard Parker from Life of Pi by Yann Martel (2001). Richard Parker is the tiger on the lifeboat with Pi after the freighter they were traveling on sinks.


BONUS: Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterson (1985). Hobbes is Calvin's best friend, viewed as a stuffed tiger to his parents, but as a real tiger to Calvin.
