App Review: Play and Learn Science by PBS Kids

Let's explore another award-winning app recognized by the Excellence in Early Learning Digital Media Award, opens a new window, Play and Learn Science!

This app was given the award because it offers "extensive tips and activity suggestions for caregivers that lead to shared experiences within the app and the real world," said the committee chair.

Children will find themselves delving into science without knowing it! Water Games offers ways to experiment with water flow and guess if items will sink or float. Ramp and Roll will guide your child through rolling items down ramps and what surface material will best help you sink your putts. In Shadow Play, your child will discover how shadows look depending on the time of day. If your child is into free play, they'll be entertained with making their own outdoor scenes in sticker mode. Lastly, Weather Control will have your child asking what the temperature is outside.

Parents and caregivers will find an extensive library of questions to ask, further activities and tips to make the most out of your child's playtime outside the app.

*Remember, as with all media, it's best if you and your child play together. The American Pediatrics Association recommends that children ages 2 to 5 have a trusted adult to relate what they're seeing to the world around them. They also suggest screen time be limited to one hour a day for this age group. For more information, take a look at their recommendations for media usage, opens a new window.
