How Do I Turn This On?

Print awareness, or the ability to handle a book and recognize print in the environment, is a necessary skill for children to have before they begin to read.

This includes knowing:

  • How to hold a book
  • Text has meaning
  • When the book is right side up
  • Which way to turn pages in a book
  • What direction text is read in the child's language(s)

Mastering this skill before kindergarten makes it easier for children to learn to read.
