Print awareness, or the ability to handle a book and recognize print in the environment, is a necessary skill for children to have before they begin to read.
This includes knowing:
- How to hold a book
- Text has meaning
- When the book is right side up
- Which way to turn pages in a book
- What direction text is read in the child's language(s)
Mastering this skill before kindergarten makes it easier for children to learn to read.
