April is an exciting time for children’s literature as it marks the celebration of International Children’s Book Day on April 2nd. This day, celebrated on or around Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, commemorates his influence on writers around the world through the bestowment of the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.
The award honors writers whose works reflect the rich oeuvre of Andersen and revel in narrative, portraying wonder and transcending physical needs and realities. In addition, the International Board on Books for Young People presents the Hans Christian Andersen Awards, the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator of children’s books, for their lifelong achievement in making an important, lasting contribution to children’s literature.
