Empresarios Destacados: Mexicana Gallery and Decor (Español)

Starting a business is hard, daunting work and there are many different reasons and inspirations for starting one. To help inspire and motivate anyone who has considered starting a business, we're sharing stories of local minority small business owners and the assistance they've received from Arapahoe Libraries, the Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center and other local organizations. We want to inspire and motivate anyone who has considered starting a business. We also hope that it'll introduce you to several of the amazing resources available to entrepreneurs and business owners in Arapahoe County and the Denver Metro area.

Starting Mexicana Gallery and Decor

Arapahoe County entrepreneur Cecilia Salazar owns Mexicana Gallery and Decor, opens a new window, where she sells handmade décor, art, clothing and accessories from Mexico. Each year, she travels to Mexico and meets with artisans and to find items that represent the essence of that area.  Then, she goes through the time consuming process of importing the items through official channels to ensure that every item meets the safety standards in the United States.

Her journey toward becoming an entrepreneur began in November 2019 when she traveled to the state of Jalisco in Mexico for her birthday. Two months later, she returned to Mexico and began buying home décor for the shop she planned to open that year. As she traveled through the city of Juarez, she went to the galleries and saw the most beautiful paintings, sculptures and ceramics. During her trip, she also talked to the locals and they kept telling her to go directly to the artisans. One morning, she went to Tonalá, Jalisco where the artesanos (artisans) sell their artesanías (handicrafts/art) in the area and began meeting the artisans, and that changed everything for her. She started learning about their cultures and why they create it, and as she said, "I started seeing it as art, not just decorations or décor."  

After that trip, her purchases cleared customs and arrived in Denver in February 2020 just before the pandemic shut down. She opened her store a year later on February 28, 2021. Since opening her store, one of Cecilia's greatest joys is having a customer come into the store and see an item that brings back a cherished memory, and they'll share stories about their grandparents or parents who had a piece just like the one in her shop.

Business Support in Colorado

For Cecilia, the Aurora-South Metro Small Business Development Center (SBDC), opens a new window is her go-to contact for all types of business support. When she got back from her trip to Mexico, she took classes from the SBDC on how to run a business and prepare her federal and state taxes. Every time she has a question, she reaches out to her SBDC Consultant, who is Spanish-English bilingual, and they either have an answer or will find it. After she took a series of courses on social media from the SBDC, she was able to save hundreds of dollars a month by doing her own social media. As she puts it, "The SBDC is a major support because I know I have someone to go to anytime I need trustworthy advice."

Empezar una empresa es un trabajo duro y abrumador, y hay muchas razones e inspiraciones distintas. Para inspirar y motivar a cualquier persona que ha considerado empezar una empresa, compartimos historias de propietarios de pequeñas empresas locales y el apoyo que recibieron de las Bibliotecas Arapahoe, el Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center (el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas de Aurora South Denver) y otras organizaciones locales. Empezando Galería y Decoración Mexicana

Cecilia Salazar, empresaria del condado de Arapahoe, es la dueña de (Mexicana Galería y Decoración, opens a new window), donde vende objetos de decoración, artesanías, ropa y accesorios de México hechos a mano. Cada año, ella viaja a México, se reúne con artesanos y encuentra artículos que representan la esencia de esa región. Luego, ella trabaja arduamente en el proceso de importar esas artesanías a través de los canales oficiales para asegurarse de que cada artículo cumple con los estándares de seguridad de los de los Estados Unidos.

Su trayectoria para convertirse en empresaria empezó en noviembre del 2019, cuando ella viajó a Jalisco (México), por su cumpleaños. Dos meses después, regresó a México y comenzó a comprar artesanías para la tienda que planeaba abrir ese año. En su recorrido por la ciudad de Juárez, ella fue a galerías donde vio bellas pinturas, esculturas y cerámicas. Durante su estancia, habló con personas locales, que le sugirieron muchas veces ir directamente a los artesanos.

Una mañana ella fue a Tonalá (Jalisco), donde los artesanos venden sus artesanías en la zona, empezó a conocerlos, y eso cambió todo para élla. Comenzó  a aprender acerca de sus esculturas y el porque las crean y dijo: “comencé a verlo como arte y no solo como adornos o accesorios de decoración”.

Después de ese viaje, sus compras pasaron por la aduana y llegaron a Denver en febrero del 2020 antes de que se cerrara todo a causa de la pandemia. Ella abrió su tienda un año después, el 28 de febrero del 2021. Desde entonces, una de las mayores alegrías de Cecilia es ver a sus clientes que entran a su tienda y encuentran objetos que les traen buenos recuerdos y, éllos le cuentan historias de abuelos o padres que tenían una pieza igual a la de su tienda.

Apoyo para negocios en Colorado

Para Cecilia, el Aurora-South Metro Small Business Development Center (SBDC), opens a new window (el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas de Aurora South Denver) es su contacto de referencia para todo tipo de apoyo comercial. Cuando élla regresó de su viaje de México, tomó clases en el SBDC sobre cómo administrar un negocio y preparar sus impuestos federales y estatales. Cada vez que tiene una pregunta se comunica con su consultor de SBDC, quien es bilingüe en español-inglés, y generalmente tiene una respuesta o sabe en donde encontrarla. Después de tomar una serie de cursos sobre las redes sociales en el  SBDC, pudo ahorrar cientos de dólares al mes al crear sus propias redes sociales. Como élla dice: “El SBDC es un gran apoyo porque sé que tengo alguien a quien acudir cada vez que necesito un consejo confiable”.
