Empresarios Destacados: Perseverance (Español)

Starting a business is hard, daunting work and there are many different reasons and inspirations for starting one. To help inspire and motivate anyone who has considered starting a business, we're sharing stories of local minority small business owners and the assistance they've received from Arapahoe Libraries, the Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center and other local organizations. We want to inspire and motivate anyone who has considered starting a business. We also hope that it'll introduce you to several of the amazing resources available to entrepreneurs and business owners in Arapahoe County and the Denver Metro area. 

Starting Perseverance

When Courtney Samuels was in college for computer science, he had a plan to be a software engineer, and then much to his surprise, his love of playing football turned into the potential for a career in the NFL. He was part of a draft his senior year, but he didn't get a contract so he returned to the original plan. He spent a few years working as a software engineer for Sun Microsystems, but he hated sitting in an office programming all day. He was getting depressed and gaining weight, and he knew that this couldn't be his life for the next 40 years. 

Thinking back, he remembered clear as day sitting outside looking at a golf course and thinking about what to do with his life.  In that moment, he realized that he wanted to be a personal trainer because he loves helping people and staying active. Next, Courtney got a part-time job at a gym to learn the business. After he had that experience,  he started his personal training business while still working as an engineer. The business was in a 500 square foot studio and he borrowed against his 401K to fund it. Since then, he has grown Perseverance to 2 locations with an 11-person staff. The original location is in the Curtis Park Neighborhood and the new location is next to the Stanley Marketplace. While there have been ups and downs, he enjoys the freedom of creating his own destiny, which has its share of risk and reward. He doesn't always know what that freedom might bring but there's so much joy.

Support for Growth

Growing a business often requires funds, and Courtney considered two different lenders. In the end, he liked and has worked with DreamSpring (formerly known as Accion) several times to get funds to continue growing his business. Final Thoughts

When asked what he'd tell someone who is thinking about starting a business, Courtney said "If this is what you're put here to do, go for it. A lot of people that didn't have successful businesses didn't have a passion for what they're doing. When the money doesn't come as fast as you want, if you don't have the passion for it, you won't put in the work."

Empezar una empresa es un trabajo duro y abrumador, y hay muchas razones e inspiraciones distintas. Para inspirar y motivar a cualquier persona que ha considerado empezar una empresa, compartimos historias de propietarios de pequeñas empresas locales y el apoyo que recibieron de las Bibliotecas Arapahoe, el Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center (el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas de Aurora South Denver) y otras organizaciones locales. Al empezar “Perseverance”  

Cuando Courtney Samuels estudiaba Ciencias de la Computación en la universidad, su plan era ser ingeniero de Software y, para su sorpresa, su pasión por el fútbol americano se convirtió en una posible carrera en la NFL (en español conocida como Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano).  En el último año de universidad participó en el proceso de reclutamiento de la NFL, pero no consiguió un contrato, así que volvió al plan original. Pasó unos años trabajando como ingeniero informático para Sun Microsystems, pero odiaba estar sentado en una oficina programando todo el día. Se estaba deprimiendo, subió de peso y sabía que ésa no podía ser su vida durante los próximos 40 años. 

Haciendo memoria, recordó con toda claridad un día en el que estaba sentado al aire libre mirando un campo de golf y pensando qué hacer con su vida. Fue en ese momento que se dio cuenta que quería ser entrenador personal porque le encantaba ayudar a la gente y mantenerse activo. A continuación, Courtney consiguió un trabajo de medio tiempo en un gimnasio para aprender el negocio. Después de obtener esa experiencia, puso en marcha su negocio de entrenamiento personal mientras seguía trabajando como ingeniero. El negocio estaba en un estudio de 500 pies cuadrados y pidió prestado dinero de su 401K para financiarlo. Desde entonces, Perseverance se ha expandido y cuenta ya con 2 gimnasios y 11 trabajadores. El local original está en el barrio de Curtis Park y la nueva sucursal está junto al Stanley Marketplace. Aunque ha tenido altibajos, disfruta de la libertad de crear su propio destino, que tiene su parte de riesgo y recompensa. No siempre sabe qué le deparará esa libertad, pero lo está disfrutando.

Desarrollar un negocio usualmente requiere de financiamiento y Courtney consideró dos instituciones diferentes. Cuando le preguntamos a Courtney qué le diría a alguien que quiere empezar su negocio, él contestó: “Si esto es lo que el destino tiene para ti, lucha por ello. Mucha gente que no ha tenido éxito en sus negocios no sentía pasión por lo que hacía. Cuando el dinero no llega tan rápido como quieres, si no estas entusiasmado, no te esforzarás".
