Lighting Tutorial: Genaray Torpedo LED

The Genaray Torpedo Portable Focusing BLT-60 is a compact, powerful 60 W COB LED light designed for photographers and videographers who need a versatile studio lighting solution. This tutorial provides the basics on using the Genaray Torpedo.

What you're working with

Turning the Genaray Torpedo on & off

  • Press the ON button on the rear control panel to power up.
  • Press OFF to shut it down.
  • The LCD shows brightness percentage (and color temp on BLT-60B models).

Adjusting Brightness

  • With the light on, use UP to increase output and DOWN to decrease it.
  • Range: 1% (very dim) to 100% (full power).

Focusing the Beam

The light has a Fresnel focusing lens that lets you go from:

  • Tight “spot” beam (15°) - for long throw or hard light
  • Wide “flood” beam (75°) - for broad, soft area coverage

Changing focus

Rotate the yellow focusing ring on the front of the light:

  • Clockwise → tighter spotlight
  • Counter-clockwise → wider floodlight

Note: This lets you go from pinpoint accents to general illumination quickly.

Using Barndoors, Diffusers & Filters

Barndoors:

  • Unfold the four flaps to shape and block spill light.
  • Close one side to cut light off a wall or control edges.

Diffusers & Color Filters:

  • Remove barndoors by loosening their screws.
  • Place a diffuser or color filter over the lens (inner edge).
  • Re-attach barndoors over the diffuser/filter.

Note: Diffusers soften the light, and color filters add creative or correction tones.

Color Temperature (BLT-60B Only)

If you have the bi-color BLT-60B version:

  • Press Mode until the color temp starts blinking.
  • Use UP/DOWN to adjust between warm (3200 K) and daylight (5600 K).
  • Press Mode again to lock it in.

Cooling and safety tips

  • The unit has a quiet fan that kicks in only when needed to keep temperatures down.
  • Don’t block ventilation slots.
  • Avoid water or very humid environments - the BLT-60 isn’t weatherproof.
  • Never stare directly into the beam.

Troubleshooting Basics

  • Light doesn’t turn on? Check power connection or state of batteries.
  • Brightness fluctuates on battery? Battery charge is dropping - swap or recharge.
  • Fan running loudly? Ensure adequate airflow around the unit.
