There's too many men, too many people Making too many problems And there's not much love to go around Can't you see this is the land of confusion?
- Land of Confusion, song by Genesis (1986)
Genesis was a British rock band formed in 1967 at Charterhouse School in Surrey, England. The founding members included Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips and Chris Stewart. Initially rooted in progressive rock, the band gained a reputation for elaborate concept albums and theatrical live performances, especially during Gabriel’s tenure as frontman.
After Gabriel’s departure in 1975, drummer Phil Collins took over lead vocals, marking a shift toward a more accessible, pop-rock sound. With Collins, Banks and Rutherford as the core trio, Genesis achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s with albums like Invisible Touch and Genesis, becoming one of the most successful bands of the decade. Steve Hackett, who joined in 1971 and left in 1977, also played a key role in shaping their early progressive sound.
Following Collins' departure in the 1990s and a less successful period with new vocalist Ray Wilson, the band went on hiatus. They reunited several times for tours, including their final tour, The Last Domino? in 2021–2022, which was their final tour. Known for their musical evolution, influential catalog, and successful solo careers of key members, Genesis has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and remains one of the most important acts in rock history.
