Charles Frank “Chuck” Mangione (born November 29, 1940) was an acclaimed American jazz composer and flugelhorn/trumpet virtuoso who rose to international prominence in the 1970s. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music (1963), he played in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers before co-leading the Jazz Brothers with his brother Gap. Mangione later directed the Eastman Jazz Ensemble (1968–72) and recorded the landmark live album Friends & Love…A Chuck Mangione Concert with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 1970. His breakthrough came in 1977 with the instrumental hit “Feels So Good,” which climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the most recognizable melodies in jazz-pop history. Over his career he released more than 30 albums and earned two Grammy Awards. His compositions “Chase the Clouds Away” and “Give It All You Got” were featured in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics. Mangione also gained a pop-culture presence by voicing himself on the animated series King of the Hill, and in 2009 donated his flugelhorn, scores, and memorabilia to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Chuck Mangione passed away on July 22, 2025.
