When All the World’s Asleep: A Supertramp Ovation

Supertramp was a British rock band formed in London in 1969 by keyboardist and vocalist Rick Davies, who passed away on September 6, 2025.

Supertramp gained widespread popularity in the 1970s with their unique blend of progressive rock, pop and art rock, distinguished by thoughtful lyrics, rich keyboard arrangements and the contrasting vocal styles of Davies and co-frontman Roger Hodgson. Their breakthrough came with the album Crime of the Century (1974), followed by a string of successful releases, including Even in the Quietest Moments (1977) and their most acclaimed album, Breakfast in America (Deluxe Edition) (1979), which featured hits like “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and “Goodbye Stranger.”

Hodgson left the band in 1983 to pursue a solo career, after which Davies continued under the Supertramp name with various lineups. While later albums saw less commercial success, the band's 1970s output remains highly influential. Known for their sophisticated songwriting and fusion of pop sensibilities with progressive rock complexity, Supertramp has sold over 60 million records worldwide and maintains a lasting legacy in classic rock history.
