As your child grows, the library grows with them! At Arapahoe Libraries, the Child and Family Library Services department creates programs and tailored services for each stage of your child’s development. Turning five is a big year of transition at the library. Your child is still welcome to attend family storytimes but may be ready for a bigger challenge and a program designed just for them.
Check out more information about what changes and what stays the same as your child grows up in the library.
What's behind the 0–5 programs at Arapahoe Libraries
When your child attends programs designed for 0-5, the skills and areas of development focus on Early Literacy. The five early literacy concepts are: sing, play, read, write and talk. These programs model early literacy in a way that can be recreated at home.
What to expect at programs for ages 5 and up
As your child enters elementary school, they’re ready for new challenge and kids programs grow alongside them! While all programs at Arapahoe Libraries are designed to be welcoming and inclusive, our offerings for ages 5-12 are specially tailored to meet the needs of developing readers, thinkers and creators.
Programs for children ages 5-8 support early elementary learners with opportunities to explore creativity, curiosity and literacy through hands-on, play-based learning. At this age, children are expanding their vocabulary, building reading comprehension and developing fluency. Whether your child is just beginning to sound out words or they're starting chapter books, library programs incorporate engaging read-alouds, book clubs and interactive activities to nurture a lifelong love of reading and the library. Our youth librarians are always here to help you find the right books to spark your child’s interest and grow their confidence.
As children grow, programs begin to focus more on themes and skills like storytelling, art and more. Kids are encouraged to participate more independently, helping them build confidence, practice problem-solving and strengthen social skills. For programs designed specifically for ages 5-8, we ask that a caregiver remain in the room.
