Public Enemy, opens a new window is a pioneering American hip-hop group known for their politically charged lyrics, militant style and revolutionary impact on rap music and culture.
Public Enemy gained national attention with their 1987 debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, but it was their second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988), that cemented their place in music history. The album was a critical and commercial success, praised for its revolutionary lyrics, aggressive beats and socially conscious themes. Their third album, Fear of a Black Planet (1990), featured the hit single “Fight the Power,” which became an anthem of resistance and was prominently featured in Spike Lee’s film Do the Right Thing. The album addressed issues like racism, media bias and African-American empowerment.
Public Enemy stands as a symbol of resistance and radical thought in music.
