
Every March, Arapahoe Libraries celebrates Women’s History Month! This is a special time to learn about amazing women who worked hard to make the world a better place for everyone.
This year’s theme is:
Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future
That means we are celebrating women, opens a new window who help take care of our planet and make the future brighter and healthier for all!
Fun Ways to Celebrate!
Here are some fun things you and your family can do:
Create some art:
- Draw a picture of a woman who inspires you.
- Write a poem about a woman you admire.
- Make a collage using magazine pictures and drawings.
Learn about the women in your life:
- Ask your family members about their life stories.
- Talk to a grandparent, aunt, teacher, or neighbor.
- Find out what makes them proud!
- Write a thank you note to a women who has changed your life.
Celebrate International Women's Day:
- March 8 is International Women’s Day, opens a new window! It’s a day to say “thank you” to the women and girls who make our world better every day.
Cool Dates in Women's History:
Here are some important moments when women made history in the United States:
- 1849 – Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman doctor in the U.S.
- 1869 – Wyoming gave women the right to vote — the first place in the U.S. to do so!
- 1917 – Jeannette Rankin became the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress.
- 1920 – The 19th Amendment gave women across the U.S. the right to vote.
- 1963 – The Equal Pay Act helped make sure women and men are paid fairly for the same work.
- 1964 – The Civil Rights Act made it illegal to discriminate at work because of sex, race, religion, or where someone is from.
- 1983 – Sally Ride became the first American woman in space!
- 2021 – On January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris is sworn in as the first woman and first woman of color vice president of the United States. "While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last," Harris said after getting elected in November 2020.
