This tutorial covers how to connect the RØDECaster Pro II to a Canon Vixia camcorder to capture high-quality podcast audio directly into your video recording. This setup bypasses the camcorder’s built-in microphone for significantly improved sound quality. This setup works great for videotaping your audio podcast.
What you're working with:
- RØDECaster Pro II
- Canon Vixia 4K Camcorder
Supplied Cables and Adapters:
- Attenuator cable (-15dB to -25dB recommended)
NOTE: Why the Attenuator Cable Matters - The RODECaster outputs a strong line-level signal, while the camcorder expects a much lower mic-level signal. The attenuator reduces this signal to prevent distortion and avoids the camera’s auto gain from causing audio to dip or “pump” during recording.

- Dual 1/4" (male) to single 3.5mm (female) adapter (L + R)

- 1/8" (3.5mm) male-to-female cable

Setup Instructions
- Mount the camcorder on a tripod and position your shot. Tip: Use the AC power cable instead of relying on battery power.
- Connect the dual 1/4" adapter to the Line Out ports on the back of the RODECaster Pro II.
- Connect the 3.5mm cable to the adapter.
- Connect the other end of the 3.5mm cable to the attenuator cable.
- Plug the attenuator cable into the camcorder’s mic input.
- Power on both the RODECaster Pro II and the camcorder.
Audio Settings
On the RODECaster Pro II:
- Set output to Line Level
- Tap the ⚙️ Settings (gear icon) on the touchscreen
- Tap “Outputs”
- Select “Line Outputs” (this is for the 1/4" jacks on the back)
- Look for Output Level
- Set it to Line Level (not Mic Level)
On the Canon Vixia:
- Switch audio to Manual
- Tap the Menu button on the touchscreen
- Go to the Audio Setup (or Audio Settings) menu
- Find “Mic Level” or “Audio Rec Level”
- Switch from Auto to Manual
- Adjust the level using the on-screen slider
- Monitor audio levels while speaking
Note: Avoid clipping. Aim for peaks around -12 dB on the camera meters.
Recommended Camera Settings
- Resolution: Optional
- NOTE: 4K produces very large files
- Frame Rate: 24p or 30p
- Shutter Speed:
- 1/50 (24p)
- 1/60 (30p)
- Use manual exposure if possible
- Lock white balance
- Turn OFF auto gain (AGC) if available
Pro Tip: Always Do a Test Recording
- Record 10–15 seconds
- Play it back on both:
- Camera
- RODECaster backup
- Confirm clean, stable audio before starting your session
Troubleshooting
No Audio in Camera
- Check all cable connections (RODECaster → adapter → attenuator → camera)
- Confirm the Canon VIXIA HF G70 is set to Mic Input (not internal mic)
- Make sure audio is set to Manual, not Auto
Audio is Distorted or Too Loud
- Confirm you are using an attenuator cable (-15dB to -25dB)
- Lower the camera input level (start around 25–35%)
- Check that the RODECaster Pro II output is not clipping
Audio is Too Quiet
- Verify RODECaster output is set to Line Level
- Increase camera input level slightly
- Check that your source mics are properly gain staged
Audio “Fades” or Pumps
- Turn OFF Auto Gain (AGC) on the camera
- Make sure you’re using an attenuator cable
- This issue is usually caused by the camera reacting to a signal that’s too hot
Audio Only on One Side (Left/Right)
- Check your dual 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter
- Ensure both left and right outputs are connected properly
- Some adapters may sum incorrectly—test with headphones if unsure
No Signal from Wireless Mics
- Confirm transmitters are powered on and paired
- Check receiver output into the RODECaster
- Verify the correct channel fader is up
