Have you ever seen fireworks, dragons or red envelopes filled with money? Those are all part of Lunar New Year, opens a new window, a special holiday celebrated by millions of people around the world!
What is Lunar New Year?
Lunar New Year marks the start of a new year on the lunar calendar, which is different from the calendar we use every day. It usually happens in late January or February. This year Lunar New Year falls on Tuesday February 17th, 2026. Each year is named after one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac, like the tiger, rabbit or dragon. 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse.
New Year traditions
- Cleaning the house. People clean to "sweep" away bad luck and make room for good luck.
- Red envelopes. Kids often get little red envelopes with money inside. Red is lucky!
- Lion and dragon dances. Dancers wearing colorful costumes and playing loud drums chase away bad spirits.
- Special foods. Dumplings, rice cakes and oranges are eaten to bring luck and happiness.
