Starting a business is hard, daunting work and there are many different reasons and inspirations for starting one. To help inspire and motivate anyone who has considered starting a business, we're sharing stories of local minority small business owners and the assistance they've received from Arapahoe Libraries, the Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center and other local organizations. We want to inspire and motivate anyone who has considered starting a business. We also hope that it'll introduce you to several of the amazing resources available to entrepreneurs and business owners in Arapahoe County and the Denver Metro area.

Starting OnePurse

Samuel Adewole moved to the United States from Nigeria 2 years ago, and one of his first priorities was to send money to his family in Africa. While doing this, he realized there was a problem that needed to be solved for himself and thousands of other immigrants living in the United States. Like so many entrepreneurs, Samuel saw a big problem and with it an opportunity to solve that problem with ingenuity and effort.  He started OnePurse, opens a new window, a currency exchange platform for people living in the United States to send money back to Africa easily, with less fees, and lower risk.

As he built OnePurse, Samuel realized that other problems could be solved too. The platform is now a secure currency exchange that screens all vendors, uses modern API technology to monitor transactions and protects customers from fraud. Since being started in 2021, OnePurse has processed over $3 million dollars in transactions, with an average of $200 thousand per month and 400 active users.

Help with Growth & Funding

Samuel's major challenge was figuring out how to scale the software to meet the market need and find funders to help him grow the business. He found the needed assistance from Access Mode, opens a new window, an organization that supports BIPOC founders of early-stage tech businesses. Access Mode has provided Samuel with a $20,000 grant and up to $10,000 in service credits to pay for development costs for OnePurse. Access Mode has also connected Samuel with a mentor and subject matter experts for topics including but not limited to marketing, financials and technical consulting. In addition, Samuel will have the opportunity to pitch OnePurse to 20 investors in March 2023 at Access Mode's inaugural cohort finale, Demo Day.

Final Thoughts

When I asked Samuel for his final thoughts, he said "I think it's very rare for people in this world to be able to do something they love and make money doing it. For anyone who is thinking about starting a business, it's a real opportunity to make an impact while doing something you love and to help people through your product or services."

He also shared an important topic that is part of the reason we decided to develop the Minority Business Owner Spotlight blog series. There needs to be an increase in support for minority founders, as many minority entrepreneurs don't have the same level of access to investment funds and mentors. Mientras creaba “OnePurse”, Samuel descubrió que también se podían resolver otros problemas. Esta plataforma ahora es un lugar seguro de cambio de moneda que examina a todos los proveedores, usa tecnología API moderna para monitorear las transacciones y protege a los clientes de fraude. Desde que se formó “OnePurse” en el año 2021, ésta ha procesado más de $3 millones de dólares en transacciones, con un promedio de $200 mil por mes y tiene 400 usuarios activos.

Ayuda con el crecimiento y el financiamiento

El principal desafío de Samuel fue averiguar cómo establecer el software para satisfacer las necesidades del mercado y encontrar financiadores que lo ayudaran a hacer crecer el negocio. Cuando le preguntamos a Samuel cuáles eran sus últimos comentarios él dijo: “pienso que es muy raro que las personas puedan hacer algo que ellos amen y ganen dinero en el proceso. Para cualquier persona que esté pensando en empezar su propio negocio, es una oportunidad real para hacer una diferencia mientras estás haciendo algo que amas y ayudando a la gente con tus productos o servicios.”

También compartió un tema importante que es parte de la razón por la que decidimos hacer la serie “Empresarios Destacados”.
