6 Netflix and Hulu Original Series to Watch on DVD


Netflix and Hulu have put out some really great original series the past few years. Unfortunately to get access to these amazing shows, you need a subscription (and an internet connection). No subscription? No problem. That's where the library comes in! Here are 6 popular Netflix and Hulu original series that you can watch and all you need is your library card.

  1. The Handmaid's Tale: If you look up best shows on Hulu, this is consistently #1 on the lists. Based on the book by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is a series starring Elizabeth Moss about a totalitarian society that forces women into child-bearing servitude. The series won 8 Primetime Emmy Awards in its first season alone and Moss won a handful of awards for her role, including a Golden Globe and an Emmy. 
  2. Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtThis hilarious sitcom was co-created by Tina Fey, one of the funniest women in comedy. The Netflix show, which finishes out its fourth and final season in January 2019, follows Kimmy Schmidt who was held for 15 years in a bunker by a cult leader. Free from the bunker and "The Reverend" who had kept her captive, she moves to New York City where she meets quirky and fascinating Lillian and Titus, and hilarity ensues.
  3. Stranger Things: This science fiction-horror Netflix series stars 80s fixture Winona Ryder and a whole cast of amazing actors of all ages. It is inspired by works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter and Stephen King. Set in the 80s, it throws you right back to movies like E.T., opens a new window and Stand by Me, opens a new window and to young childhood friendships. It's a must-watch!
  4. Orange Is the New Black: Created by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, OITNB is based on Piper Kerman's memoir, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison, about her experiences in a minimum-security federal prison in Connecticut. The Netflix series received 16 Emmy Award nominations and critical acclaim particularly for its depiction of race, sexuality, gender and body types, and for humanizing prisoners.
  5. 13 Reasons Why: Based on the best-selling novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, this Netflix series follows a boy who receives a set of cassette tapes from his classmate who recently completed suicide. The tapes tell him thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Season 3 is set to be released in 2019. Although receiving many positive reviews from critics, the series generated controversy over its betrayal of suicide and self-harm.
  6. 11.22.63: This Hulu miniseries is based on the Stephen King novel 11/22/63. It is executive produced by J.J. Abrams, King, Bridget Carpenter and Bryan Burk and produced by James Franco who also stars in the series. Franco plays a high school teacher who is given the opportunity to travel back in time and change history, specifically stopping the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The show garnered positive reviews from most critics.
