Happy Older Americans Month, opens a new window! The theme for 2024 is "Powered by Connection." Creating meaningful connections with others in the community not only feels good, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opens a new window it can also positively impact our health. Where better to meet new people and celebrate connections than at the library? Here are a few ways you can participate:
Attend a Monthly Program
- Lean in to your hobbies and interests and join a recurring program. You'll be able to meet regulars and form bonds over the course of multiple programs.
- Do you like discussing books? Maybe a traditional book club is all you need to meet your crowd. Fortunately, all of the Arapahoe Libraries have book clubs, opens a new window, and you can even join book clubs with specific focuses, such as the Mystery Book Club, opens a new window or the Nonfiction Book Club, opens a new window.
- If you would rather be outside enjoying the weather, Meet and Move, opens a new window is the program for you. Join the group for this twice monthly program at Koelbel Library and walk around the neighborhood while you chat.
- We have all sorts of programs, from crafts at the Makerspace, opens a new window to the Writers Circle, opens a new window, so there's something for everyone. Check out our Events page, opens a new window for more information.
Volunteer
Volunteering can be a great way to meet new people.
- If you'd like to help at the library, you can find more information here. The available volunteer opportunities change throughout the year, so keep an eye out for new listings.
Volunteers of America, opens a new window is also a good organization to consider.
- If you are retired and looking for a volunteer position, the RSVP Program can help you connect with a local nonprofit. A coordinator asks you questions about your interests and skills and then places you accordingly.
- Another Denver Volunteers of America program is Foster Grandparents, opens a new window. In this program, volunteers are paired with students to help them learn math and reading. Volunteers of America has a wide reach in the community, and you can have a positive impact in a variety of ways.
Find Transportation
However you plan to celebrate Older Americans Month, getting transportation can be a concern.
- The Getting There Guide, opens a new window was designed to help community members remain independent by accessing various forms of transportation in the Denver Metro area.
- If you would like additional support with navigating RTD, opens a new window or the other listed options, opens a new window, the Denver Regional Mobility and Access Council can give you special training.
