Video Podcasting: Movo Wireless Mics, RØDECaster Pro and Canon VIXIA

This podcasting setup uses the Movo WMX-2-DUO Dual Wireless Lavalier Microphone System for audio, the RODECaster Pro II to manage sound, and the Canon VIXIA HF G70 for video. You’ll see how to connect everything and get started with recording your video podcast.

Note: We suggest bringing your own SD card. The Canon VIXIA HF G70 uses SDXC cards (UHS-I recommended). We recommend a 128GB or 256GB card (Class 10 or V30 minimum for 4K). Menu settings that reduce resolution, bitrate, and frame rate can reduce file size.

What is video podcasting?

Video podcasting (also called a vodcast) is a type of podcast that includes video alongside audio, so audiences can watch as well as listen. Unlike traditional audio-only podcasts, video podcasts are recorded in a visual format and distributed on platforms that support video.

Why People Choose Video Podcasting

Advantages:

  • Stronger audience connection (facial expressions and body language)
  • More engaging for visual learners
  • Easy to repurpose into short clips for social media

Challenges:

  • Requires more equipment (cameras, lighting)
  • Larger file sizes
  • More complex editing

Simple Setup Options

Simple Setup

  • Modern smartphones shoot excellent 1080p or 4K video
  • Built-in microphone (you can also plug in a lav mic)
  • Use the rear camera (better quality)
  • Position at eye level

Laptop Setup

  • Most laptops have decent cameras
  • Built-in microphones (or use a USB microphone)

Room and Physical Set Up

Positioning

  • Seat participants evenly spaced
  • Clip lav mics 6–8 inches from each speaker’s mouth
  • Place wireless transmitters securely on belt or in pocket
  • Camera centered at eye level capturing all participants (wide shot)

Lighting

  • Key light in front of subjects
  • Avoid overhead shadows
  • No bright windows behind subjects

Wireless Mic Setup

  1. Power on both transmitters and the receiver (included in the WMX-2-DUO system).
  2. Confirm transmitters are paired to the receiver.
  3. Connect the receiver output to an XLR input on the RODECaster Pro II (using the appropriate output cable).
  4. Speak at normal volume and adjust gain levels on the RODECaster so audio peaks safely without clipping.

Headphones

  • Headphones are already plugged in.
  • Adjust each person's headphone level individually on the RODECaster Pro II.

Note: Changing headphone level does not affect the recording.

Connecting Audio to the Canon VIXIA

  • Run an audio cable from the RODECaster Monitor Out (using an RCA to 1/8” adapter) into the Canon’s Mic Input.

Note: You also have the option of recording audio on the RODECaster and video on the Canon, then combining them later in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Canon VIXIA HF G70 Setup

  • Insert SD card.

Recommended 4K Camera Settings

Note: Full 4K recording requires a lot of storage space. It’s recommended your SD card be at least 128GB. Lowering resolution or frame rate will reduce file size.

  • Resolution: 4K (3840x2160)
  • Frame rate: 24fps or 30fps
